Quarteera will keep going

This decision does not change who we are or the work we do.

Quarteera is registered and operates in Germany, so this decision by the Russian authorities does not change our legal status here. However, the “undesirable organisation” designation is directed not only at the organisation itself: Russian law also provides for liability for people whom the authorities consider to be involved in its activities. As a result, a decision taken in Russia may create real risks for members of our community, as well as for partners, activists and others with whom we maintain professional and civic ties — particularly if they are in Russia, hold Russian citizenship, or plan to travel there.

Quarteera is a Germany-based civil society organisation. We will continue our work in Germany in full accordance with German law:

• supporting LGBTQ+ people, people with migrant backgrounds and other vulnerable communities;
• providing educational and cultural programming;
• defending human rights;
• working with partners across Germany, Europe, and beyond. The Russian authorities’ decision is part of a broader pattern of pressure on independent civil society and on organisations that speak openly about human rights, democracy, and freedom.

We will not allow that pressure to define our work!

We will continue to stand against homophobia, transphobia, antisemitism, discrimination and disinformation. We will continue to speak clearly about Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and to support Ukraine, its sovereignty and its territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.

The safety of our community remains a priority. If this applies to you, please contact us confidentially before taking part in public events or other forms of collaboration. But for our work in Germany and for the vast majority of our partners, nothing changes. But in one important sense, this moment does matter. We need your solidarity now more than ever.

Keep working with us. Invite us to collaborate. Come to our events. Share our work. Speak up in support of independent civil society.

At the same time, we have no intention of scaling back the work Quarteera exists to do. Attempts to silence independent civil society must not be allowed to make it weaker.
